TRUMPETS
The trumpet is regard as being one of the most ancient of instruments and examples were found when the tomb of the Pharoah Tutankhamun was uncovered by Howard Carter in 1922.
These instruments certainly are over 3,500 years old. In the Medieval period trumpets were mostly used for signalling and military purposes and were therefore very important to the army. At this time trumpet-playing was a closely guarded art and instruction occurred in selective guilds. It was a high-status activity and closely related to kingship and royalty. Writing in Il principe in 1513, Niccolò Machiavelli advised that:
The New Prince would authorise the use of the trumpet for the use of chevaliers
as opposed to the common public. They were used in orchestras from the early 1600s. Particularly notable in this collection is the the one made in 1667 by Simon Beale, when Purcell was a boy.
