CORNETTS

The cornett is an early lip-reed instrument which is played in a similar way to brass instruments like trumpets. It was developed by the end of the 15th century and in common use (in Britain) until the end of the 17th century. Often it would be played in consort along with sackbuts. There are a number of sizes and types of the instrument, of which the Bate Collection has representative variants. More can be found out about it in the Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments (Macmillan Press, 1984) ISBN 0-333-37878-4
