Baines frequently delivered talks at other museums. In folder 34 we have a number of letters arranging for him to speak around the world, for example, this one confirming his appearance at a symposium to mark the opening of the new musical instrument galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in November 1971. A previous letter from the same sender recognised Baines as ‘an outstanding authority on instruments’ and also ‘an experienced musician who could certainly contribute many interesting things on the value of the instrument themselves as a guide for the performance of old music’.

Baines accepted the invitation and proposed a paper titled ‘Performance Research on Classical Wind Instruments in an Oxford Collection’. He was invited to speak alongside Dr J. H. van der Meer, Curator of the collection of musical instruments at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, and Arthur Mendel, Chairman of the Music Department of Princeton University, in a panel chaired by Professor Barry Brook, Dean of the Graduate Faculty of City University of New York.
