Folklore notes

In addition to researching musical instruments, music, and musicians, Baines compiled notes on the non-musical aspects of musical culture, including acting, dance, carnival, funerals, and religious festivals such as Christmas and Dead Sunday (usually the fourth Sunday in Lent).

This page of notes is the first of four on sword dance. The underlined words are cross-references to other sections of his notes, for example, hobby-horse, Plough Monday, blackface, and fool. These pages have brief notes on the sword dance tradition in a range of countries including England (Yorkshire, Northumbria and Durham, Ampleforth and Lincolnshire in particular), Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Yugoslavia, and Ethiopia.
