Early exercise book

Just like his later A4 pages of notes, Baines’s exercise books, mostly dating from before he took up his post at the Bate Collection in 1970, reveal a wide range of interests.

In this book (number 68) Baines detailed the sorts of musical instruments found across the African continent. This page summarises the varieties of flutes (e.g. nose flutes) and trumpets (e.g. side-blown gourds) found in each region, with detailed country-by-country notes on surrounding pages.
