A page of calculations relating to the physics of ‘brasswind’ instruments (what today we would call simply ‘brass’): this page follows a series of graphs showing curves relating to the bells of trumpets and trombones. This page was clearly used as scrap in the process of drawing graphs and was not intended for presentation, but it demonstrates how fascinated Baines was with the mechanisms behind sound production in musical instruments.
Alongside Baines’s detailed notes, the archive contains many pages of lists of numbers and similarly frenetic scribbles that were useful to him in working things out, but which are hard to read today.
